Overseas Student Health Cover

What is Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC)?

In Australia, Overseas Students Health Cover (OSHC) is a mandatory document when applying for most types of visas. Generally, the Subclass 500 Student Visa holders must have OSHC for covering the entire studying period in Australia.

Why do I need to have OSHC?

Firstly, you need to have OSHC to meet the visa application requirement as it is listed as a necessary condition on the Australian government website.

Secondly, while the international students are studying in Australia, unfortunate accidents and illness could happen anytime, the medical expense of which may be costly to international students. With mandatory health cover, international students will be more confident to study in Australia as their health will be looked after.

What can be covered with OSHC?

It depends on different OSHC provider and different types of health cover. For example, Allianz, MWT Global current OSHC partner, will provide international students with OSHC, to cover the fees including public hospital admission, private hospital, rehabilitation, ambulance, repatriation, out of hospital medical services such as local doctors (GP), prescribed medicine, pathology, radiology and other specialists.

Despite these fees being covered by OSHC provider, there are many fees not included in OSHC policy. Therefore, to make any decision regarding this, please kindly talk with staff from your OSHC provider to understand your rights and interests.
